Title III, Language Instruction for English Learners (EL)

The EL Department at Esperanza Cyber provides EL students with intensive English language and literacy instruction in the four communication domains: reading, writing, speaking, and listening. EL teachers will teach students functional and academic English through explicit English language instruction and act as a resource for teachers in the content areas to help service students with accommodations and modifications. EL teachers will also assist administrators and guidance counselors in providing appropriate accommodations to EL students
when administering standardized tests. EL teachers and paraeducators are responsible for providing support in the content areas through “push in” and “pull out” services and provide appropriate accommodations and modifications
to EL students in content classes. These services are designed collaboratively by the content teacher and the EL teacher on an ongoing basis. The tools used in modifying and accommodating work for EL students can be found in the English Language Development Standards K12 published by the WIDA Consortium. Each El student is assessed annually in English proficiency.

The school uses federal funds from this program to provide high-quality professional development to classroom teachers, school leaders, and other school or community-based organizational personnel.

Professional development scheduled for 2018-2019 includes:
(1) Instructional strategies for EL students: Engaging the EL Student in the Live Virtual Class
(2) Understanding and implementation of assessments of EL students: How to accommodate and/or modify instruction and assessments for the EL student
(3) Understanding and implementation of EL standards and academic content for EL students: Using technology tools for translation and Aligning language objectives into lesson learning goals
